Kayonan (Tree of Life)

The first puppet to dance in the Balinese shadow puppet performance is the tree shaped kayonan, symbolizing the genesis of the universe through the evolution of the five elements of life: earth, water, fire, wind and ether. It separates the good and bad on the right and left while its branches extend equally to both sides. It also links the upper and lower worlds.
