I find relief in creating art that is simple, free from elaboration or ornamentation. I see my art as an antidote to our complicated lives. I use clean lines, powerful images, and bright primary colors. I strive for simplicity in my life, as well as my art. I love abstract art because it forces me to delve deep into my emotions. So much more consideration is required in order to shape a deep thought or emotion into a pure shape or form.
Linocut printmaking epitomizes everything I am looking for in a medium: striking, clean lines and brilliant ink colors. Thoughts expressed on a linocut print cannot be subtle, but are instead bold and stimulating. There is irony in the process of carving, as it gracefully reveals each layer and yet creates a harsh reality with the permanence of each cut. I am intrigued by the impressions from the inks, as much as the space and silence of the blank paper. Careful planning is required with each piece, and yet I force myself to be spontaneous with the creation. Recently, I have also returned to painting. The discipline attained from years of printmaking has given me valuable tools that I have applied to my paintings, including step-by-step processes and selective color blending. I have enjoyed combining printmaking and painting techniques to create art on a larger scale and express myself at a different level. As my appreciation of the power of each medium grows, each succeeding composition expresses more freedom and personality. It is the beauty of simplicity that liberates me and enables me to search for what lies beneath. |
